Open Letter to global Music Community

DotMusic is invited for Community Evaluation by ICANN with the EIU

Dear global Music Community members and DotMusic Supporting Organizations,

After nearly 10 years of work, the .MUSIC (the new domain extension for the Internet) is close to final approval.  We are pleased to announce that ICANN, the governing body of the Internet, has started the evaluation of our global Music Community-based application to secure the rights for the .MUSIC top-level domain name.  Now, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) will review our Application and Supporters to determine whether our Initiative meets the “Community criteria” to win .MUSIC.

The evaluation will take between 3 to 5 months. During the next few months you should be aware that the EIU will send you a message: “Confirmation of authenticity of support for new generic Top Level Domain (.MUSIC)” (under the email address ending in @EIU.com) seeking confirmation of the authenticity of your organization’s support letter, as well as, confirmation that the sender of the letter had the authority at the time of submission to indicate your organization’s support for our application.

Our DotMusic team and our Community of supporters would like to thank you for your continued support. The .MUSIC Initiative is supported by over 100 relevant organizations with members representing over 95% of music consumed globally, making this the largest coalition of organizations ever assembled to support a music cause.

These relevant organizations include: IFACCA IFPI, RIAA, FIM, ICMP, NMPA, IAMIC, ISME, A2IM, WIN, IMPALA, AIM, MERLIN, NAMM, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, NSAI, The Recording Academy, UK Music, BPI, JMI, IMI, IPRS, NARIP, PPL, HFA, WME, GEMA, BVMI, Future of Music Coalition, SOCAN, IMMF, MMF, Reverbnation, Tunecore/Believe, CDBaby, BFM/TheOrchard, LyricFind, SonicBids, Altafonte, League of American Orchestras, BMAT, INDMusic,CMRRA, CIMA, StoryAmp, Americana Music, AIR, ABMI, ARC, IMNZ, PledgeMusic, NWC, BureauExport|French Music, WAM, MusicBC, Music Austria, Manitoba Music, Music:LX, Francophonie Diffusion, TommyBoy, Alberta Music, Pleimo, Music Centre Slovakia, TheSyndicate, QMusic, MusicNT, MusicVictoria, MusicSA, Music SW, MusiqueNB, Broadjam, AMAEI, MusicXray, MusicNovaScotia, MusicKickup, BMA, Bandzoogle, WiseBand, Nimbit, MusicTasmania, CMW, MusicJustMusic, Heaven11, ProPlay, Dart, Dot Tickets,  Spoonz Music Group, Redeye, OurStage, MusiekCentrum, Conductors Guild, Discmakers, MusicBrainz, A&R Worldwide, NewMusicSeminar, MusicStory, SFMusicTech, IKON, CMJ, AudioMicro, OneRPM, Planetary, Marcato, iMusicianDigital, Horus, SyncExchange, Music Registry, IRMA, Music Matters, NUE Agency, Music Services Asia, MMNY, Hacate, YouBloom and many others.

DotMusic’s music-tailored Policies were created with your input and guidance.  Our policies are aligned with a mission that follows unified, coherent ideals that the entire Community subscribes to, such as:

  • creating a trusted identifier and safe haven for music consumption;
  • protecting musicians’ rights and intellectual property;
  • fighting copyright infringement/piracy;
  • supporting fair compensation and music education; and
  • following a multi-stakeholder approach of representation of all types of global legitimate music constituents

While there has been over three years for anyone to express genuine concerns, DotMusic expects competitors (that may include affiliates or third-parties they solicit) to obstruct our Initiative by sending letters to ICANN rejecting the existence of the Music Community. If we do not meet the criteria as a “Music Community” then .MUSIC is auctioned to the highest bidder. However, a one-page .MUSIC applicant comparison shows why DotMusic exceeds the criteria required and meets the needs of the Community.

Call-To-Action (It only takes a few seconds to digitally sign):

To ensure .MUSIC is governed by the music community and not corporations (such as Google, Amazon, publicly-traded companies and VC-backed investment firms), quickly sign your support for a music-tailored, community-based .MUSIC at https://music.us/sign

We thank you again for your ongoing support and contribution in this very important digital initiative for the global music community. We look forward to closely working with you when this evaluation is determined. With the Community’s full support, together we will prevail the Community evaluation and secure the rights for .MUSIC for the Community!

We will keep you posted with our progress,

The DotMusic Team
